Dressage, jumping and endurance (eventing) are disciplines of which sport?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Equestrian

Detailed Solution

Equestrian sports involve riding horses. The world governing body is the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI), founded in 1921, with its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Main equestrian disciplines:

Dressage: the rider guides the horse through a series of precise, graceful movements, sometimes set to music. It is often called "horse ballet".

Jumping (show jumping): the horse and rider must jump over a course of obstacles such as fences and walls, without knocking them down, within a time limit.

Eventing: a combination of dressage, cross-country (riding over natural obstacles in open country) and show jumping, held over several days. It tests the endurance and versatility of the horse and rider.

Endurance: long-distance races, often 80 to 160 km, which test the horse's stamina. It is an FEI discipline but not an Olympic event.

Other FEI disciplines include driving, vaulting and reining. Para-dressage is part of the Paralympics.

Special features:

  • Equestrian is the only Olympic sport in which humans and animals compete together as a team.
  • It is one of the few Olympic sports in which men and women compete against each other on equal terms.
  • At the Olympics, the three disciplines are dressage, eventing and jumping.

India and equestrian sport:

  • Fouaad Mirza won two silver medals (individual and team eventing) at the 2018 Asian Games and became the first Indian equestrian to qualify for the Olympics in over 20 years (Tokyo 2020).
  • At the 2022 Asian Games (held in 2023 in Hangzhou), India won the team dressage gold medal, its first equestrian gold at the Asian Games since 1982.
  • The Equestrian Federation of India (EFI) governs the sport in India.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Gymnastics includes floor, vault, beam, bars and rings.
  • ✗Athletics includes track and field events.
  • ✗Fencing uses swords: foil, epee and sabre.

Quick tip

Remember: Equestrian = dressage, jumping, eventing (Olympic) plus endurance; only Olympic sport with animals; FEI HQ = Lausanne; India = team dressage gold at Asian Games 2023.
