How many concentric scoring rings (circles) does a standard archery target face have?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — 10

Detailed Solution

A standard target face used in World Archery competitions has 10 concentric scoring rings. The innermost ring scores 10 points and the outermost ring scores 1 point.

Colours of the target:

The 10 rings are arranged in five colour zones, each containing two rings:

  • Gold (yellow): 10 and 9 points (the centre).
  • Red: 8 and 7 points.
  • Blue: 6 and 5 points.
  • Black: 4 and 3 points.
  • White: 2 and 1 points.
  • A small inner ring inside the 10, called the "X", is used to break ties: the archer with more X's wins.

Olympic archery facts:

In Olympic recurve archery, archers shoot at a target face 122 cm in diameter placed 70 metres away. The gold centre (10 ring) is only 12.2 cm wide.

Compound archery, which is part of the Asian Games and the World Championships, is shot at 50 metres at a smaller target face. Compound archery will be included in the Olympics for the first time at Los Angeles 2028 (mixed team event).

In individual matches, archers shoot "sets" of three arrows; the winner of a set gets 2 set points, and the first to 6 set points wins the match.

The time limit is about 20 seconds per arrow in individual matches.

The world governing body is World Archery (formerly FITA), founded in 1931 and based in Lausanne.

India and archery:

  • Archery is India's traditional sport and is linked with the Mahabharata hero Arjuna.
  • Deepika Kumari became world number one in women's recurve, and Indian compound archers won all five compound gold medals at the 2022 Asian Games.
  • Archery is the national sport of Bhutan.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗5 is the number of colour zones, not scoring rings.
  • ✗8 and 12 are not the number of scoring rings on a standard target.

Quick tip

Remember: Archery target = 10 rings in 5 colours (gold, red, blue, black, white), centre = 10 points; Olympic recurve distance = 70 m, target 122 cm; X ring breaks ties.
