In hockey, a yellow card means the player is suspended from the pitch for a minimum of:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — 5 minutes

Detailed Solution

In field hockey, umpires use three coloured cards to punish players for misconduct or serious fouls. Each card means a temporary or permanent suspension.

Hockey cards (as per FIH rules):

Green card: a warning and a temporary suspension of 2 minutes of playing time.

Yellow card: a temporary suspension of at least 5 minutes of playing time. The umpire can decide on a longer suspension (often up to 10 minutes) depending on how serious the offence is.

Red card: a permanent suspension; the player must leave the field for the rest of the match and cannot be replaced. Further disciplinary action may follow.

During a suspension, the team must play with one player fewer.

Other key rules of hockey:

  • Each team has 11 players on the field, including a goalkeeper.
  • A match lasts 60 minutes, played in four quarters of 15 minutes each (since 2014).
  • Unlimited "rolling" substitutions are allowed.
  • The ball can be played only with the flat side of the stick.
  • Goals can be scored only from inside the shooting circle (the "D"), which is 14.63 m (16 yards) from the goal.
  • A penalty corner is awarded for certain fouls inside the circle; a penalty stroke is taken from a spot 6.4 m in front of the goal.
  • The field is 91.4 m long and 55 m wide.
  • The world governing body is the International Hockey Federation (FIH), with its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
  • Comparison with football: in football, a yellow card is a caution (two yellows make a red), and a red card means a sending-off; there is no timed suspension in standard football rules.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗2 minutes is the suspension for a green card.
  • ✗10 minutes is a common longer yellow-card suspension, but the minimum is 5.
  • ✗The rest of the match is the punishment for a red card.

Quick tip

Remember: Hockey cards: green = 2 minutes, yellow = minimum 5 minutes, red = permanent; match = 4 quarters of 15 minutes; 11 players; FIH HQ = Lausanne.
