In which year did Anil Kumble take all 10 wickets in a Test innings?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — 1999

Detailed Solution

On 7 February 1999, Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble took all 10 wickets in Pakistan's second innings in the Test match at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground (now the Arun Jaitley Stadium) in Delhi. His figures were 26.3 overs, 9 maidens, 74 runs and 10 wickets (10 for 74).

Significance of the feat:

  • Kumble became only the second bowler in Test history to take all ten wickets in an innings, after England's off-spinner Jim Laker, who took 10 for 53 against Australia at Old Trafford, Manchester, in 1956.
  • India won the match by 212 runs, levelling the two-match series 1-1.

Later, New Zealand's left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel became the third bowler to achieve this, taking 10 for 119 against India at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, in December 2021. Ajaz Patel was born in Mumbai.

More about Anil Kumble:

  • He was born on 17 October 1970 in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and was nicknamed "Jumbo".
  • He took 619 wickets in 132 Test matches, the most by an Indian bowler and the fourth highest in Test history.
  • He took 337 wickets in ODIs.
  • He captained India in 14 Tests in 2007-08.
  • He bowled with a broken jaw against the West Indies in Antigua in 2002, taking the wicket of Brian Lara.
  • He was head coach of the Indian men's team in 2016-17 and later headed the ICC Cricket Committee.
  • He was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2015 and received the Padma Shri (2005).

Other bowling records:

  • Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka holds the record for the most Test wickets (800).
  • Jim Laker took 19 wickets in the 1956 Old Trafford Test, the most in a Test match.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1996 is the year Kumble led India's bowling in the World Cup, where he was the leading wicket-taker.
  • ✗2001 and 2004 are not the years of his 10-wicket innings.

Quick tip

Remember: Anil Kumble = 10/74 vs Pakistan, Delhi (Feroz Shah Kotla), 7 February 1999; other 10-wicket innings = Jim Laker (1956) and Ajaz Patel (2021, Mumbai); Kumble = 619 Test wickets.
