In which year was the 'Super Over' introduced in international cricket, replacing the bowl-out to break a tie?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — 2008

Detailed Solution

The Super Over (also called a one-over eliminator) was introduced in international cricket in 2008 to decide tied Twenty20 matches, replacing the earlier "bowl-out" method.

The bowl-out:

In a bowl-out, five bowlers from each team bowled at an unguarded set of stumps, and the team that hit the stumps more times won.

The most famous bowl-out took place at the first ICC World Twenty20 in 2007 in South Africa, when the group match between India and Pakistan in Durban was tied. India won the bowl-out 3-0, with Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Robin Uthappa all hitting the stumps, while all the Pakistani bowlers missed.

The bowl-out was criticised as not being a real test of cricket skill, so it was replaced.

How a Super Over works:

  • Each team nominates three batsmen and one bowler, and each team bats for one over (six balls).
  • A team's innings ends if it loses two wickets.
  • The team that scores more runs in its over wins.
  • The first Super Over in a Twenty20 International was played in December 2008 between New Zealand and the West Indies, which the West Indies won.

Change after the 2019 World Cup:

The 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup final between England and New Zealand at Lord's was tied, and the Super Over was also tied. England won on the basis of having hit more boundaries in the match. This rule was widely criticised.

In October 2019, the ICC changed the rule: if a Super Over in a knockout match is tied, more Super Overs are played until there is a winner.

The Super Over is also used in ODIs (in knockout stages) and in leagues such as the IPL.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗2003 is when T20 cricket began in England's domestic game.
  • ✗2011 is the year India won its second ODI World Cup.
  • ✗2019 is the year of the tied World Cup final and the rule change about repeated Super Overs.

Quick tip

Remember: Super Over = introduced 2008, replaced the bowl-out (India beat Pakistan in a bowl-out at the 2007 World T20); after the 2019 World Cup final, repeated Super Overs replaced the boundary-count rule.
