Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — 2016

Detailed Solution

India hosted the ICC World Twenty20 for the first time in March-April 2016. It was the sixth edition of the men's T20 World Cup. The women's tournament was held at the same time.

The 2016 tournament:

  • Matches were played in several Indian cities, including Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Mohali, Nagpur and Dharamshala.
  • The final was played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on 3 April 2016.

West Indies, led by Darren Sammy, defeated England by 4 wickets. Needing 19 runs off the last over, Carlos Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes off Ben Stokes to win the title.

West Indies became the first team to win the men's T20 World Cup twice (2012 and 2016).

The West Indies women's team also won the women's World Twenty20 that year, beating Australia in the final.

Virat Kohli was named Player of the Tournament.

India lost to West Indies in the semi-final at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Other ICC events hosted by India:

  • 1987 ODI World Cup (with Pakistan).
  • 1996 ODI World Cup (with Pakistan and Sri Lanka).
  • 2011 ODI World Cup (with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh), which India won.
  • 2023 ODI World Cup (alone), which Australia won.
  • The 2021 T20 World Cup was officially hosted by India (BCCI) but played in the UAE and Oman because of COVID-19.
  • 2026 T20 World Cup: co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

T20 World Cup winners:

2007 India, 2009 Pakistan, 2010 England, 2012 West Indies, 2014 Sri Lanka, 2016 West Indies, 2021 Australia, 2022 England, 2024 India.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗2007 was the first T20 World Cup, held in South Africa.
  • ✗2011 is the year India co-hosted and won the ODI World Cup.
  • ✗2021 was BCCI-hosted but played in the UAE and Oman, not in India.

Quick tip

Remember: India first hosted the T20 World Cup in 2016 (final at Eden Gardens, West Indies won, Carlos Brathwaite's four sixes); 2026 = India and Sri Lanka.
