Answer: Option B — 2022

Detailed Solution

India won the Thomas Cup for the first time in May 2022, in Bangkok, Thailand. In the final, India defeated Indonesia, the most successful team in the history of the tournament, by 3-0. This was India's first-ever appearance in a Thomas Cup final and one of the greatest achievements in Indian badminton.

The winning matches in the final:

  • Lakshya Sen won the first singles match.
  • Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the first doubles match.
  • Kidambi Srikanth won the second singles match.

On the way to the final, India beat the strong teams of Malaysia (quarter-final) and Denmark (semi-final). H. S. Prannoy played a key role in the knockout matches. The team was captained by Kidambi Srikanth.

The Government of India announced a cash reward of Rs 1 crore for the team.

About the Thomas Cup:

  • It is the world men's team championship of badminton, organised by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
  • It was named after Sir George Alan Thomas, an English badminton player, who donated the trophy.

It was first held in 1948-49 and won by Malaya (now Malaysia). It is now held every two years.

Indonesia has won it the most times (14), followed by China.

Related badminton team events:

  • Uber Cup: the women's world team championship, named after Betty Uber, first held in 1956-57.
  • Sudirman Cup: the mixed team championship, named after Dick Sudirman of Indonesia, first held in 1989.

India's other badminton highlights include P. V. Sindhu's World Championship gold (2019) and Olympic medals (silver 2016, bronze 2020), and Saina Nehwal's bronze at the 2012 Olympics.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗2018 was not a winning year for India.
  • ✗2014 was not a winning year for India.
  • ✗2024 was not a winning year for India.

Quick tip

Remember: India's first Thomas Cup = 2022, Bangkok, beat Indonesia 3-0 (Lakshya Sen, Satwik-Chirag, Srikanth); Thomas = men, Uber = women, Sudirman = mixed.
