Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Gymnastics

Detailed Solution

Pommel horse, rings (often called Roman rings) and the vaulting table are apparatus used in artistic gymnastics.

Apparatus in artistic gymnastics:

Men compete on six apparatus:

  • Floor exercise.
  • Pommel horse.
  • Still rings.
  • Vault (vaulting table).
  • Parallel bars.
  • Horizontal bar (high bar).

Women compete on four apparatus:

  • Vault.
  • Uneven bars.
  • Balance beam.
  • Floor exercise (performed to music).
  • The "all-around" event combines scores from all the apparatus.

Disciplines of gymnastics:

  • Artistic gymnastics: the apparatus events listed above.
  • Rhythmic gymnastics: performed by women with a ribbon, hoop, ball or clubs, to music.
  • Trampoline: added to the Olympics in 2000.
  • Others (not in the Olympics): acrobatic gymnastics, aerobic gymnastics and parkour.
  • Gymnastics has been part of the modern Olympics since 1896; women's events were added in 1928.
  • The world governing body is the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG), founded in 1881, the oldest international sports federation still in existence.

Famous gymnasts:

  • Nadia Comăneci of Romania scored the first perfect 10 in Olympic gymnastics at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
  • Simone Biles of the USA is regarded as one of the greatest gymnasts, with many Olympic and World Championship titles.

India and gymnastics:

Dipa Karmakar from Tripura became the first Indian woman gymnast to compete at the Olympics (Rio 2016). She finished fourth in the vault final, attempting the very difficult "Produnova" vault. In 2024, she won gold on the vault at the Asian Championships, the first Indian to do so.

Ashish Kumar won India's first Commonwealth Games gymnastics medal (2010).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Equestrian events use horses, but the pommel horse is a gymnastics apparatus.
  • ✗Weightlifting uses barbells.
  • ✗Athletics uses hurdles, poles and throwing implements.

Quick tip

Remember: Men's gymnastics = 6 apparatus (floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, horizontal bar); women's = 4 (vault, uneven bars, beam, floor); Dipa Karmakar = 4th in vault, Rio 2016.
