'Tenpins' refers to which game?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Bowling

Detailed Solution

"Tenpins", or tenpin bowling, is a form of bowling in which a player rolls a heavy ball down a long, narrow wooden or synthetic lane to knock down ten pins arranged in a triangle at the far end.

How tenpin bowling is played:

  • The lane is 60 feet (18.29 m) long from the foul line to the head pin and about 41.5 inches wide, with gutters on both sides.
  • The ten pins are arranged in a triangle of four rows (1, 2, 3 and 4 pins).

A game consists of 10 frames. In each frame, the player gets up to two attempts to knock down all ten pins.

A "strike" is knocking down all ten pins with the first ball; the player gets 10 points plus the pins knocked down by the next two balls.

A "spare" is knocking down all ten pins with two balls; the player gets 10 points plus the pins knocked down by the next ball.

A "perfect game" is 12 strikes in a row, giving the maximum score of 300.

A "split" is when the pins left standing after the first ball are separated by a gap.

The ball usually weighs up to 16 pounds (7.26 kg) and has three finger holes.

History:

Bowling is an ancient game; forms of it were played in ancient Egypt and Germany.

Ninepin bowling was popular in Europe and America. According to a popular story, when ninepins was banned in some US states in the 1840s because of gambling, players added a tenth pin to get around the law. Tenpin bowling then became the standard form in the USA.

The world governing body is the International Bowling Federation (IBF).

Bowling was a demonstration sport at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and is part of the Asian Games.

Other forms of bowling:

Lawn bowls: played on grass by rolling biased balls towards a small ball called the "jack"; it is part of the Commonwealth Games. India's women's fours team won gold in lawn bowls at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Billiards uses a cue, balls and a table with pockets.
  • ✗Croquet uses mallets, balls and hoops on a lawn.
  • ✗Golf uses clubs, balls and holes.

Quick tip

Remember: Tenpins = bowling (10 frames, perfect game = 300, strike and spare); lawn bowls = jack (India won women's fours gold at 2022 CWG).
