Answer: Option C — England
Detailed Solution
The 1983 Prudential Cup, the third Cricket World Cup, was held in England (and Wales) from 9 to 25 June 1983. India won the tournament under the captaincy of Kapil Dev.
About the 1983 World Cup:
- Eight teams took part: India, West Indies, England, Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
- Matches were 60 overs per side and played in white clothing with a red ball.
- West Indies, champions in 1975 and 1979, were the favourites.
India's journey:
India surprisingly beat West Indies in their first group match.
Against Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells, India were 17 for 5 when Kapil Dev scored 175 not out, one of the greatest innings in ODI history. (It was not televised because of a BBC strike.)
India beat England in the semi-final at Old Trafford, Manchester.
In the final at Lord's on 25 June 1983, India scored 183 and bowled out West Indies for 140 to win by 43 runs. Mohinder Amarnath was Man of the Match.
Why the first three World Cups were in England:
- England had the infrastructure and the long summer daylight needed for 60-over matches.
- The first World Cups (1975, 1979 and 1983) were all held in England and sponsored by Prudential, an insurance company, so they were called the Prudential Cup.
- 1987 was the first World Cup held outside England, jointly hosted by India and Pakistan, with 50 overs per side.
India's World Cup history:
India won the ODI World Cup in 1983 (England) and 2011 (India, under M. S. Dhoni, final at Wankhede, Mumbai).
India co-hosted the World Cup in 1987, 1996 and 2011, and hosted it alone in 2023.
Why not the other options?
- ✗India first co-hosted the World Cup in 1987.
- ✗Australia hosted it in 1992 (with New Zealand) and 2015.
- ✗The West Indies hosted it in 2007.
Quick tip
Remember: 1983 World Cup = England (third Prudential Cup), India won under Kapil Dev, final at Lord's (25 June); first World Cup outside England = 1987 (India and Pakistan).
