Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Olympic Council of Asia

Detailed Solution

The Asian Games, also called the Asiad, are organised and regulated by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).

About the Olympic Council of Asia:

  • It was founded in November 1982 in New Delhi, during the 9th Asian Games, and replaced the Asian Games Federation (formed in 1949).
  • Its headquarters is in Kuwait City, Kuwait.
  • It has 45 member National Olympic Committees from Asian countries.
  • It is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the continental association for Asia.
  • Besides the Asian Games, the OCA organises the Asian Winter Games, the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, the Asian Beach Games and the Asian Youth Games.

About the Asian Games:

  • They are held every four years, two years after (or before) the Summer Olympics.
  • The first Asian Games were held in New Delhi in 1951, with 11 countries.
  • The motto is "Ever Onward".
  • India has hosted the Asian Games twice (1951 and 1982).

The 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, were postponed to 2023 because of COVID-19. India won a record 107 medals there, including 28 golds.

The 2026 Asian Games are scheduled in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, and the 2030 Games in Doha, Qatar.

The Asian Games include some sports not in the Olympics, such as kabaddi, sepak takraw, wushu, cricket and esports.

Other continental and multi-sport bodies:

  • International Olympic Committee (IOC): runs the Olympics; headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
  • Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF): runs the Commonwealth Games; headquarters in London.
  • South Asian Games: organised by the South Asia Olympic Council.
  • Asian Football Confederation (AFC): governs football in Asia; headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The International Olympic Committee runs the Olympic Games, not the Asian Games directly.
  • ✗The Asian Football Confederation governs only football in Asia.
  • ✗The Commonwealth Games Federation runs the Commonwealth Games.

Quick tip

Remember: Asian Games = regulated by the Olympic Council of Asia (founded 1982 in New Delhi, headquarters Kuwait City); motto "Ever Onward"; first Asiad = New Delhi 1951.
