Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Rourkela, Odisha

Detailed Solution

The Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium is located in Rourkela, Sundargarh district, Odisha. It was built by the Government of Odisha and inaugurated in January 2023, just before the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup.

Key facts about the stadium:

  • It has a seating capacity of about 20,000 and is described as the largest fully seated hockey stadium in India and one of the largest in the world.
  • It was built in a short time, about 15 months, on the campus of the Biju Patnaik University of Technology.

It co-hosted the 2023 Men's Hockey World Cup along with the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. Germany won that World Cup.

It is named after Birsa Munda (1875-1900), the tribal freedom fighter who led the "Ulgulan" (great tumult) against British rule and is honoured as "Dharti Aaba". His birth anniversary, 15 November, is observed as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas.

Odisha and hockey:

Sundargarh district is known as the "cradle of Indian hockey" because it has produced many international players, such as Dilip Tirkey, Prabodh Tirkey, Ignace Tirkey, Lazarus Barla and Amit Rohidas, mostly from tribal communities.

The Odisha government has been the main sponsor of the Indian men's and women's hockey teams since 2018.

Odisha also hosted the 2018 Men's Hockey World Cup (in Bhubaneswar) and matches of the FIH Pro League.

The Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar has a hockey stadium, an athletics stadium and a high-performance centre.

Other hockey venues in India:

  • Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi.
  • Captain Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior (now a cricket venue).
  • Astroturf stadium of the Sports Authority of India in Bengaluru.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Bhubaneswar has the Kalinga Stadium, which co-hosted the 2018 and 2023 World Cups.
  • ✗Ranchi has the Astroturf Hockey Stadium (Morabadi).
  • ✗Jamshedpur has the JRD Tata Sports Complex, a football venue.

Quick tip

Remember: Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium = Rourkela (Odisha), about 20,000 seats, opened 2023 for the Men's Hockey World Cup; Sundargarh = "cradle of Indian hockey".
