Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Commonwealth Games Federation

Detailed Solution

The Commonwealth Games are organised and governed by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), which has its headquarters in London, United Kingdom. The CGF is now also known by the name "Commonwealth Sport".

About the Commonwealth Games:

They are a multi-sport event for athletes from the member nations and territories of the Commonwealth, most of which were once part of the British Empire.

The first Games were held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada, as the British Empire Games. About 400 athletes from 11 countries took part.

The name has changed over time: British Empire Games (1930-1950), British Empire and Commonwealth Games (1954-1966), British Commonwealth Games (1970-1974), and Commonwealth Games (since 1978).

They are held every four years, usually two years after the Olympic Games.

The Games include some sports that are not in the Olympics, such as lawn bowls, netball and squash, and they include para-sports in the main programme.

A baton relay (the Queen's Baton Relay, now the King's Baton Relay) carries a message from the British monarch to the host city.

The CGF's motto is "Humanity, Equality, Destiny".

India and the Commonwealth Games:

  • India first took part in 1934 in London.
  • India hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in New Delhi, finishing second on the medal table with 101 medals (38 gold), its best performance.
  • At the 2022 Birmingham Games, India won 61 medals (22 gold).
  • India has bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the centenary edition, with Ahmedabad as the proposed host city.
  • The 2026 Games are being held in Glasgow, Scotland, with a reduced programme of sports.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The International Olympic Committee organises the Olympic Games.
  • ✗The Olympic Council of Asia organises the Asian Games.
  • ✗The Commonwealth Secretariat is the political organisation of the Commonwealth, not the body that runs the Games.

Quick tip

Remember: Commonwealth Games = organised by the Commonwealth Games Federation (London); first held 1930 (Hamilton, Canada); India hosted 2010 (Delhi, 101 medals); 2026 = Glasgow.
