The Duleep Trophy is a first-class tournament of which sport?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Cricket

Detailed Solution

The Duleep Trophy is a domestic first-class cricket competition in India, organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It was started in the 1961-62 season.

Key facts:

It is named after Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji (1905-1959), a cricketer from the princely state of Nawanagar (now Jamnagar in Gujarat), who played Test cricket for England in the 1920s and 1930s. He was a nephew of Ranjitsinhji, after whom the Ranji Trophy is named.

The tournament was traditionally played between zonal teams: North, South, East, West and Central Zone (later also North-East Zone). Players chosen from the state teams that played in the Ranji Trophy represented their zones.

In some seasons the format was changed, for example by using teams named India Red, India Blue and India Green, or by playing with a pink ball under lights, but the zonal format was restored later.

West Zone and North Zone have been among the most successful teams.

Major domestic cricket tournaments in India:

Ranji Trophy (since 1934-35): the premier first-class championship between state teams, named after Ranjitsinhji. Mumbai has won the most titles.

Irani Cup (since 1959-60): played between the Ranji Trophy champion and the Rest of India team.

Vijay Hazare Trophy: the one-day (50-over) championship.

Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: the T20 championship.

Deodhar Trophy: a zonal one-day tournament.

  • K. Nayudu Trophy and Cooch Behar Trophy: for under-23 and under-19 players.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Hockey tournaments include the Beighton Cup and the Obaidullah Khan Cup.
  • ✗Football tournaments include the Durand Cup, the Santosh Trophy and the IFA Shield.
  • ✗Badminton tournaments include the Syed Modi International.

Quick tip

Remember: Duleep Trophy = cricket, zonal first-class tournament (since 1961-62), named after Duleepsinhji (nephew of Ranjitsinhji); Ranji = states; Irani = Ranji champion vs Rest of India.
