The equipment called 'antenna' is used in which sport?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Volleyball

Detailed Solution

In volleyball, two flexible rods called "antennas" are fixed to the top of the net, one on each side, directly above the sidelines of the court.

Details of the antenna:

  • Each antenna is 1.80 m long and 10 mm in diameter.
  • It is made of fibreglass or a similar material and is painted in alternating red and white stripes, each 10 cm wide.
  • It sticks up 80 cm above the top of the net.

Purpose of the antenna:

  • The antennas mark the side limits of the "crossing space", the area through which the ball must pass when it goes over the net.
  • If the ball touches the antenna, or passes over the net outside the antennas, it is "out", and the point goes to the other team.
  • Players are also not allowed to touch the antenna while playing the ball; doing so is a fault.

Other volleyball equipment and measurements:

  • Net height: 2.43 m for men and 2.24 m for women.
  • Net width: 1 m; length 9.5-10 m.
  • Court: 18 m x 9 m.
  • Ball: circumference 65-67 cm and weight 260-280 g.
  • Side bands: two white bands, 5 cm wide, attached to the net vertically above each sideline; the antennas are fastened at the outer edge of these bands.

Other volleyball terms:

  • Libero: a defensive specialist in a different coloured jersey.
  • Spike: a powerful attacking hit.
  • Block: an attempt to stop a spike at the net.
  • Dig: a defensive save of a spike.
  • Rally point system: a point is scored on every rally.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Badminton uses a net, posts, shuttlecock and racket, but no antennas.
  • ✗Tennis uses a net with singles sticks and a centre strap.
  • ✗Table tennis uses a small net with a post assembly.

Quick tip

Remember: Antenna (1.80 m, red and white stripes, marks the crossing space) = volleyball; volleyball net = 2.43 m (men), 2.24 m (women); libero = defensive specialist.
