Detailed Solution

The first Khelo India Winter Games were held from 7 to 11 March 2020 at Gulmarg, in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. They were organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, with the J&K Sports Council.

  • Sports included alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, snowboarding, ski mountaineering, ice hockey, ice skating and snowshoe running.
  • Jammu and Kashmir topped the medal table at the first edition.
  • Some events were also held at Leh in Ladakh, such as ice hockey and ice skating.

Later editions:

  • 2021 and 2022: held again at Gulmarg, with some events in other places.
  • 2024: the fourth edition was held in two parts, at Leh (Ladakh) for ice sports and Gulmarg for snow sports.
  • 2025: the fifth edition was held at Leh and Gulmarg.

The Khelo India programme:

It was launched in 2017-18 by the Government of India to develop a strong sports culture at the grassroots and to identify young talent.

It includes the Khelo India Youth Games (first held in 2018 in Delhi as the Khelo India School Games), the Khelo India University Games (first held in 2020 in Odisha) and the Khelo India Para Games (first held in December 2023 in Delhi).

Talented athletes identified through the programme receive financial support for training.

Winter sports in India:

  • Auli (Uttarakhand) and Solang Valley (Himachal Pradesh) are other ski destinations.

  • ✗2017 is around when the Khelo India scheme was launched.
