Answer: Option D — London
Detailed Solution
The first and only Athletics World Cup was held on 14-15 July 2018 at the London Stadium (the former Olympic Stadium) in London, England.
About the 2018 Athletics World Cup:
- It was organised by UK Athletics as a team competition, separate from the World Athletics Championships.
- Eight countries took part: the United States, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Poland, Jamaica, France, Germany, China and South Africa.
- Each country entered one athlete per event (or one relay team).
- Points were awarded according to finishing position, and the team with the most points won.
- The United States won the competition.
- A large prize fund was offered to the winning nations and athletes.
- The event was not held again after 2018 because of cost and scheduling problems.
Other major athletics competitions:
World Athletics Championships: first held in 1983 in Helsinki; now held every two years. India's Neeraj Chopra won gold in the javelin in 2023 (Budapest), and Anju Bobby George won India's first medal (bronze, long jump) in 2003 (Paris).
Diamond League: an annual series of one-day meetings, started in 2010, with a final at the end of the season. Neeraj Chopra won the Diamond League title in 2022 (Zurich), the first Indian to do so.
World Athletics Indoor Championships: since 1985.
Continental Cup: a team competition between continents, held in 2010, 2014 and 2018 (previously the IAAF World Cup from 1977).
World Athletics, the governing body, is based in Monaco.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Doha hosted the 2019 World Athletics Championships.
- ✗Monaco is the headquarters of World Athletics and hosts a Diamond League meeting, not the Athletics World Cup.
- ✗Berlin hosted the 2009 World Championships, where Usain Bolt set the 100 m (9.58 s) and 200 m (19.19 s) world records.
Quick tip
Remember: Athletics World Cup = London 2018 (only edition, USA won); World Championships began 1983 (Helsinki); Neeraj Chopra = first Indian Diamond League champion (2022).
