Answer: Option B — 1924

Detailed Solution

The first National Games of India, then called the "Indian Olympic Games", were held in February 1924 at Lahore (now in Pakistan). Their main purpose was to select athletes to represent India at the 1924 Paris Olympics.

History of the National Games:

The early editions were held every two years and were called the Indian Olympic Games.

They were organised under the guidance of Professor G. D. Sondhi and others who promoted the Olympic movement in India.

The name was changed to the "National Games" in 1940, at the Bombay edition.

After independence, the Games were held irregularly.

The 1985 National Games in New Delhi marked a new start, with the Games being held on the model of the Olympics, with many more sports.

Recent National Games:

  • 36th National Games: Gujarat, 2022.
  • 37th National Games: Goa, 2023 (October-November).
  • 38th National Games: Uttarakhand, January-February 2025.
  • Services Sports Control Board (Services) and Maharashtra have been among the most successful teams in recent editions.
  • The National Games are organised by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), founded in 1927.

  • Khelo India Youth Games: since 2018.
  • Khelo India University Games: since 2020.
  • Khelo India Winter Games: since 2020.
  • Inter-State athletics and national championships of individual federations.

Indian Olympic Association:

Formed in 1927, with Sir Dorabji Tata as its first President and Dr. A. G. Noehren as Secretary.

  • T. Usha became the first woman President of the IOA in December 2022.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1940 is the year the Indian Olympic Games were renamed the National Games.
  • ✗1951 is the year of the first Asian Games (New Delhi).
  • ✗1985 is when the National Games were relaunched on the Olympic model in New Delhi.
