Answer: Option A — 1964
Detailed Solution
The first Olympic Games held in Asia were the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, held from 10 to 24 October 1964.
Highlights of the Tokyo 1964 Olympics:
They were the first Olympics broadcast live internationally by satellite, and the first to use computers to keep results.
Judo and volleyball were introduced as Olympic sports. Japan's women's volleyball team won gold and was nicknamed the "Witches of the Orient".
The Olympic cauldron was lit by Yoshinori Sakai, a young athlete born in Hiroshima on 6 August 1945, the day the atomic bomb was dropped. He was chosen as a symbol of Japan's recovery and of peace.
The Games showcased Japan's recovery after World War II, and the high-speed Shinkansen ("bullet train") was opened just before the Games.
About 5,100 athletes from 93 countries took part.
India at Tokyo 1964:
The Indian men's hockey team won the gold medal, beating Pakistan 1-0 in the final. Mohinder Lal scored the winning goal from a penalty corner, and the team was captained by Charanjit Singh.
This was India's seventh Olympic hockey gold.
Olympic Games in Asia:
- 1964 Tokyo (Summer).
- 1972 Sapporo, Japan (Winter): the first Winter Olympics in Asia.
- 1988 Seoul, South Korea (Summer).
- 1998 Nagano, Japan (Winter).
- 2008 Beijing, China (Summer).
- 2018 Pyeongchang, South Korea (Winter).
- 2020 Tokyo (Summer, held in 2021).
- 2022 Beijing (Winter).
Tokyo is the only Asian city to host the Summer Olympics twice. India has bid to host the Olympics in 2036.
Why not the other options?
- ✗1956 Olympics were held in Melbourne, Australia, the first in the Southern Hemisphere (Oceania).
- ✗1988 Olympics were held in Seoul, the second Summer Olympics in Asia.
- ✗2008 Olympics were held in Beijing, China's first Olympics.
Quick tip
Remember: First Olympics in Asia = Tokyo 1964 (judo and volleyball debut; India won hockey gold); first Winter Olympics in Asia = Sapporo 1972; Tokyo = only Asian city with two Summer Olympics.
