Answer: Option D — England
Detailed Solution
The first Women's Cricket World Cup was held in England in June-July 1973. It took place two years before the first men's Cricket World Cup (1975), which makes women's cricket the first to have a World Cup.
About the 1973 tournament:
It was played as a 60-over-a-side (one-day) competition in a round-robin format, with no knockout final.
Seven teams took part: England, Australia, New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, an "International XI" and a "Young England" team. India did not take part.
England won the tournament, finishing on top of the table. Their last match against Australia at Edgbaston acted as a decider. England was captained by Rachael Heyhoe Flint, and Enid Bakewell was a star performer.
The tournament was made possible mainly by the efforts of Rachael Heyhoe Flint and the funding of the businessman Sir Jack Hayward.
Women's World Cup facts:
Australia has won the Women's World Cup the most times (seven times).
India first took part in 1978, when it hosted the tournament. India reached the finals in 2005 and 2017.
In the 2025 Women's World Cup, held in India and Sri Lanka, India won the title for the first time, beating South Africa in the final in Navi Mumbai.
The first women's Test match was played between England and Australia in 1934.
The ICC Women's T20 World Cup began in 2009 (England).
The men's Cricket World Cup started in 1975 in England and was won by the West Indies under Clive Lloyd. India won it in 1983 (Kapil Dev) and 2011 (M. S. Dhoni).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Australia has won the most Women's World Cups but did not host the first one.
- ✗New Zealand first hosted the tournament in 1982.
- ✗India first hosted in 1978.
Quick tip
Remember: First Women's Cricket World Cup = 1973, England (before the men's 1975 WC), won by England (Rachael Heyhoe Flint); India first played/hosted in 1978.
