Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Singapore

Detailed Solution

The first Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) were held in Singapore from 14 to 26 August 2010. About 3,600 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees took part in 26 sports.

About the Youth Olympic Games:

  • They are an international multi-sport event for athletes aged 14 to 18, organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
  • The idea was proposed by Jacques Rogge, then President of the IOC, and approved in 2007.
  • Like the Olympics, they are held every four years, with separate Summer and Winter Games.
  • Besides competitions, the YOG includes a Culture and Education Programme to teach young athletes about Olympic values, healthy lifestyles and careers.
  • Some events are new or experimental, such as mixed-gender and mixed-nation teams, and some sports later added to the Olympics (such as 3x3 basketball and breaking) were first tried at the YOG.

Editions of the Summer Youth Olympics:

  • 2010: Singapore.
  • 2014: Nanjing, China.
  • 2018: Buenos Aires, Argentina.
  • 2026: Dakar, Senegal (postponed from 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic); it is the first Olympic event held in Africa.

Editions of the Winter Youth Olympics:

  • 2012: Innsbruck, Austria (first).
  • 2016: Lillehammer, Norway.
  • 2020: Lausanne, Switzerland.
  • 2024: Gangwon, South Korea.

India at the Youth Olympics:

  • At Singapore 2010, India won 8 medals (6 silver and 2 bronze).
  • At Buenos Aires 2018, India won 13 medals, including its first golds: weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga (first gold), and shooters Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Nanjing hosted the second Summer YOG in 2014.
  • ✗Buenos Aires hosted the third Summer YOG in 2018.
  • ✗Innsbruck hosted the first Winter YOG in 2012.

Quick tip

Remember: First Summer Youth Olympics = Singapore 2010; first Winter YOG = Innsbruck 2012; age 14-18; India's first YOG gold = Jeremy Lalrinnunga (2018).
