Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — William G. Morgan

Detailed Solution

Morgan. Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a physical education director at the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA.

How volleyball was invented:

Morgan wanted to create an indoor game for businessmen and older people that would be less rough and physically demanding than basketball, which had been invented four years earlier.

He combined elements of basketball, tennis, baseball and handball. He used a tennis net raised to about 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 m) and the inner bladder of a basketball as the ball.

He originally called the game "Mintonette", because it was similar to badminton.

In 1896, at a demonstration, Professor Alfred Halstead noticed that the players were "volleying" the ball back and forth over the net, and suggested the name "volley ball". The name was later written as one word, "volleyball".

Development of volleyball:

  • The game spread quickly through the YMCA network to other countries, including India.
  • The world governing body, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), was founded in 1947 in Paris; its headquarters is now in Lausanne, Switzerland.
  • Volleyball became an Olympic sport at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
  • Beach volleyball, played with two players per team on sand, became an Olympic sport at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

The Volleyball Federation of India was formed in 1951. India won bronze in men's volleyball at the 1958 Asian Games and silver in 1962.

Inventors of other sports:

  • James Naismith: basketball (1891).
  • Abner Doubleday: traditionally (though historically doubtful) credited with inventing baseball (1839).
  • Major Walter Wingfield: lawn tennis (1873-74), as "Sphairistike".
  • William Webb Ellis: rugby (1823, according to legend).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗James Naismith invented basketball (1891).
  • ✗Abner Doubleday is traditionally linked with baseball.
  • ✗Walter Wingfield is credited with inventing lawn tennis.

Quick tip

Remember: Volleyball = William G. Morgan (1895, Holyoke YMCA, first called "Mintonette"); basketball = James Naismith (1891); FIVB = 1947; Olympic since 1964.
