Detailed Solution
The International Hockey Federation (FIH, from the French "Federation Internationale de Hockey") has its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
About the FIH:
- It was founded on 7 January 1924 in Paris, France, by seven national federations: Austria, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Hungary, Spain and Switzerland.
- India joined the FIH in 1928, through the Indian Hockey Federation (founded in 1925).
- It is the international governing body of field hockey and indoor hockey.
- It organises the Hockey World Cup (men's since 1971; women's since 1974), the FIH Pro League (since 2019), and Olympic hockey competitions.
- Its current President is Tayyab Ikram of Pakistan, elected in 2022.
India's achievements in hockey:
- India has won eight Olympic gold medals in men's hockey (1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964 and 1980), the most by any country.
- India won the Men's Hockey World Cup in 1975 at Kuala Lumpur, under the captaincy of Ajit Pal Singh.
- India won bronze medals at the Tokyo Olympics (2020, held in 2021) and the Paris Olympics (2024).
Dhyan Chand, the "Wizard of Hockey", helped India win three Olympic gold medals (1928, 1932, 1936). His birthday, 29 August, is National Sports Day, and India's highest sports award, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, is named after him.
Hockey India, formed in 2009, is the national governing body.
Odisha has hosted the Men's Hockey World Cup twice (2018 and 2023) and sponsors the national teams.
Other international sports federations based in Lausanne:
International Olympic Committee (IOC), Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), FIVB (volleyball), World Archery and many others. Lausanne is called the "Olympic Capital".
Headquarters of other federations:
FIFA: Zurich; BWF: Kuala Lumpur; ICC: Dubai; World Athletics: Monaco.
Why not the other options?
- ✗London has the headquarters of the International Tennis Federation.
- ✗Kuala Lumpur has the headquarters of the Badminton World Federation.
- ✗Amsterdam does not host the FIH.
Quick tip
Remember: FIH = Lausanne, Switzerland (founded 1924 in Paris; India joined 1928); India = 8 Olympic hockey golds, World Cup 1975; Lausanne = "Olympic Capital" (IOC, CAS, ITTF).
