Answer: Option B — Chennai

Detailed Solution

The Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI), the national governing body for squash, has its headquarters in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

About the SRFI:

  • It is affiliated with the World Squash Federation (WSF) and the Asian Squash Federation.
  • It organises national championships and selects Indian players for international events.

Chennai is the main centre for squash in India. The "Indian Squash Academy" in Chennai, set up by the SRFI in the early 2000s, has trained many top players.

India's achievements in squash:

At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Dipika Pallikal Karthik and Joshna Chinappa won gold in the women's doubles, India's first Commonwealth Games gold in squash.

Saurav Ghosal became the first Indian to break into the top ten of the men's world rankings (2019). He won bronze in men's singles at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, India's first individual Commonwealth medal in squash.

At the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou (held in 2023), India won the gold medal in the men's team event and in mixed doubles (Dipika Pallikal and Harinder Pal Sandhu).

Dipika Pallikal was the first Indian to break into the top ten of the women's world rankings (2012).

Squash in the Olympics:

Squash will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, along with cricket (T20), flag football, lacrosse (sixes) and baseball-softball. The decision was taken by the IOC at its session in Mumbai in October 2023.

About squash:

  • It originated in the 19th century at Harrow School in England, developed from the game of rackets.
  • It is played in a four-walled court with a small, hollow rubber ball.
  • The World Squash Federation (WSF) was founded in 1967 as the International Squash Rackets Federation
  • Professional squash is run by the "Professional Squash Association" (PSA).

Headquarters of other Indian sports federations:

  • Hockey India, Athletics Federation of India, Boxing Federation of India and Wrestling Federation of India: New Delhi.
  • All India Chess Federation: Chennai.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗New Delhi has the headquarters of most sports federations.
  • ✗Kolkata is a football centre, but the All India Football Federation is based in New Delhi.
  • ✗Mumbai has the headquarters of the BCCI.

Quick tip

Remember: Squash Rackets Federation of India = Chennai (Indian Squash Academy); first CWG squash gold = Dipika Pallikal and Joshna Chinappa (2014); squash in Olympics from LA 2028; BCCI = Mumbai; AICF = Chennai.
