Answer: Option A — 1924
Detailed Solution
The International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) was founded in 1924 in Paris, France, under its French name "Comité International des Sports des Sourds" (CISS). It was set up by Eugène Rubens-Alcais, a deaf Frenchman, who is regarded as the founder of the Deaflympics. The ICSD's headquarters is now in Lausanne, Switzerland.
About the Deaflympics:
They are an international multi-sport event for deaf and hard-of-hearing athletes, held every four years, like the Olympics. There are Summer and Winter editions.
The first Games, called the "International Silent Games", were held in Paris in August 1924. Athletes from nine European countries took part.
They are the second-oldest multi-sport games after the Olympic Games, and the first international games for athletes with a disability.
The first Winter Deaflympics were held in 1949 in Seefeld, Austria.
To take part, athletes must have a hearing loss of at least 55 decibels in their better ear, and they are not allowed to use hearing aids or cochlear implants during competition. Starting guns are replaced by lights and flags.
They were renamed the "Deaflympics" in 2001, with the approval of the International Olympic Committee.
Deaflympics and Paralympics: deaf athletes do not take part in the Paralympics; they have their own separate Games because communication needs are different.
India and the Deaflympics:
- India has taken part since 1965.
- At the 2021 Deaflympics in Caxias do Sul, Brazil (held in 2022), India won 16 medals, its best performance, including gold medals in shooting (Dhanush Srikanth) and badminton.
- The 2025 Summer Deaflympics were held in Tokyo, Japan.
Why not the other options?
- ✗1948 is when the Stoke Mandeville Games (forerunner of the Paralympics) began.
- ✗1960 is when the first Paralympic Games were held in Rome.
- ✗1989 is when the International Paralympic Committee was founded.
Quick tip
Remember: ICSD founded 1924 (Paris) by Eugène Rubens-Alcais; first Deaflympics = Paris 1924 ("International Silent Games"); ICSD HQ = Lausanne; first Paralympics = Rome 1960.
