Answer: Option D — 1926

Detailed Solution

The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) was founded in 1926.

About the ITTF:

It was founded in December 1926 in London (some sources mention Berlin, where planning meetings were held earlier in the year), by representatives of countries including England, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Sweden, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Wales and India.

India was one of the founding members of the ITTF.

Its first President was Ivor Montagu of England.

The first World Table Tennis Championships were held in London in December 1926.

It is the international governing body of table tennis.

Its headquarters is in Lausanne, Switzerland.

It runs the World Table Tennis Championships and the World Cup, and its commercial arm, World Table Tennis (WTT), organises professional events.

About table tennis:

  • It began as an indoor game in England in the late 19th century, and it was also called "ping-pong" because of the sound the ball makes.
  • It became an Olympic sport at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
  • China has dominated the sport for many decades.
  • "Ping-pong diplomacy" (1971): the visit of the American table tennis team to China helped improve relations between the USA and China.

Table tennis in India:

  • The Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) was formed in 1926 and is the national governing body.
  • Achanta Sharath Kamal: won several Commonwealth Games gold medals and received the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna (2022).
  • Manika Batra: won four medals, including gold in women's singles, at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and received the Khel Ratna (2020).
  • The Indian men's team won the team gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
  • At the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Indian women's team reached the quarter-finals for the first time.
  • "Ultimate Table Tennis" is India's professional league (2017).

Other international federations founded in the 1920s:

  • FIH (hockey): 1924, Paris.
  • FIDE (chess): 1924, Paris.
  • ICC (cricket): 1909 (as the Imperial Cricket Conference).
  • FIFA (football): 1904, Paris.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1900 is the year the first Olympic Games with women participants were held (Paris).
  • ✗1946 is not the founding year of the ITTF.
  • ✗1988 is the year table tennis became an Olympic sport.

Quick tip

Remember: ITTF = 1926 (London; India a founding member; HQ Lausanne); first World Championships 1926; Olympic sport since 1988 (Seoul); TTFI = 1926; ping-pong diplomacy = 1971.
