Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — 1956-57

Detailed Solution

The Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy (MAKA Trophy) was instituted in 1956-57 by the Government of India. It is awarded every year to the university that achieves the best overall performance in inter-university sports competitions in India.

About the MAKA Trophy:

It is named after Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (1888-1958), a freedom fighter and independent India's first Education Minister. His birthday, 11 November, is celebrated as National Education Day.

It is given by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports as part of the National Sports Awards, usually presented by the President of India.

The winning university receives a rolling trophy and a cash prize. There are also awards for the first runner-up and second runner-up universities.

Performance is judged on results in national and international inter-university tournaments organised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), and in events such as the Khelo India University Games.

Universities from Punjab, especially Guru Nanak Dev University (Amritsar) and Panjab University (Chandigarh), have won the trophy many times.

India's National Sports Awards:

  • Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award (since 1991-92): highest award for sportspersons.
  • Arjuna Award (since 1961): for outstanding performance by sportspersons.
  • Dronacharya Award (since 1985): for coaches.
  • Dhyan Chand Award (2002-2022): for lifetime achievement; replaced by the Arjuna Award (lifetime) from 2023.
  • Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar (since 2009): for organisations promoting sport.
  • MAKA Trophy (since 1956-57): for universities.
  • Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award: for adventure sports (land, water, air and lifetime achievement).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1961-62 is close to when the Arjuna Award was instituted (1961).
  • ✗1985-86 is close to when the Dronacharya Award began (1985).
  • ✗1991-92 is when the Rajiv Gandhi (now Major Dhyan Chand) Khel Ratna was instituted.

Quick tip

Remember: MAKA Trophy = 1956-57, for the best university in inter-university sports; Arjuna = 1961; Dronacharya = 1985; Khel Ratna = 1991-92.
