Answer: Option C — Goa

Detailed Solution

The National Institute of Water Sports (NIWS) is located at Panaji (Panjim), Goa. It was set up in 1990 by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, and works under the Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM).

Purpose of the NIWS:

  • To train people in water sports and water safety, such as lifesaving, swimming, scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, jet skiing and boating.
  • To train and certify water sports instructors and operators, and to promote safe water sports tourism in India.
  • To conduct courses for lifeguards and rescue personnel on beaches and in water parks.
  • It works with state tourism departments to develop water sports along India's coasts, lakes and rivers.
  • Why Goa?
  • Goa has a long coastline with many beaches and rivers, and is one of India's most popular tourist destinations, so it is well suited to water sports training and tourism.

Other national sports and adventure institutes in India:

  • Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala, Punjab: India's premier sports training institute, set up in 1961.
  • Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE), Gwalior.
  • Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling, founded in 1954 after Tenzing Norgay's Everest climb.
  • Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand.
  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali, Himachal Pradesh.
  • Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM&WS), Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
  • National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS), Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Army Rowing Node, Pune, and the Army Sports Institute, Pune.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Kerala is known for its snake boat races and backwaters, but the NIWS is in Goa.
  • ✗The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are popular for scuba diving but do not host the NIWS.
  • ✗Odisha has the Chilika lake, and Bhubaneswar is a sports hub, but the NIWS is not there.

Quick tip

Remember: National Institute of Water Sports = Panaji, Goa (1990, Ministry of Tourism); NIS = Patiala; HMI = Darjeeling; NIM = Uttarkashi; LNIPE = Gwalior.
