Answer: Option C — 1984

Detailed Solution

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) was set up in January 1984 by the Government of India, as a registered society under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It is the apex national sports body for the promotion of sport and the training of athletes.

Why SAI was created:

  • It was set up after India hosted the 9th Asian Games in New Delhi in 1982, mainly to maintain and use the sports infrastructure built for the Games, and to promote sport across the country.
  • In 1987, the Society for National Institutes of Physical Education and Sports (SNIPES), which ran the National Institute of Sports at Patiala and the physical education colleges, was merged with SAI.

Functions of SAI:

  • It runs training centres and schemes such as the National Centres of Excellence, SAI Training Centres and Khelo India centres.
  • It supports national camps for elite athletes and helps implement schemes such as the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and Khelo India.
  • It manages major stadiums in Delhi, including the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex and the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.
  • Its headquarters is at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium complex in New Delhi.
  • Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala, and the Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education, Thiruvananthapuram, are linked with SAI.

Key dates in Indian sports administration:

  • 1927: Indian Olympic Association formed.
  • 1961: Arjuna Award instituted; NIS Patiala founded.
  • 1982: New Delhi Asian Games.
  • 1984: Sports Authority of India.
  • 1991-92: Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (now Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna) instituted.
  • 2018: Khelo India programme and the National Sports University, Imphal.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1961 is when the Arjuna Award and NIS Patiala began.
  • ✗1982 is the year India hosted the Asian Games.
  • ✗1991 is the year the Khel Ratna award was introduced.

Quick tip

Remember: Sports Authority of India = 1984 (after the 1982 Asian Games), headquarters JLN Stadium, New Delhi; SNIPES merged in 1987; runs Khelo India and TOPS.
