Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Malaysia

Detailed Solution

The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup is an annual international men's field hockey tournament held in Malaysia, usually at Ipoh in the state of Perak.

About the tournament:

It was first held in 1983 and later became an annual tournament.

It is named after Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak (1928-2014), a great supporter of hockey. He also served as the ninth Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) of Malaysia (1989-1994) and was a President of the Asian Hockey Federation.

Top hockey nations, such as Australia, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Korea and Argentina, are invited to take part.

Australia has won the tournament the most times.

India has won it five times: 1985, 1991, 1995, 2009 and 2010 (the 2010 title was shared with South Korea after the final was washed out by rain).

Major hockey tournaments:

  • Olympic Games: hockey since 1908 (men) and 1980 (women).
  • Hockey World Cup: since 1971; India won in 1975.
  • FIH Pro League: started in 2019.
  • Champions Trophy: started in 1978 by Pakistan; discontinued after 2018.
  • Asia Cup and Asian Champions Trophy: for Asian teams.

Hockey in India:

  • Indian domestic tournaments include the Beighton Cup (oldest, 1895), the Aga Khan Tournament and the Bombay Gold Cup.
  • The Hockey India League was relaunched in 2024-25.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Singapore does not host the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.
  • ✗Indonesia does not host it; its stadium Gelora Bung Karno hosted the 2018 Asian Games.
  • ✗Brunei is ruled by a sultan but does not host this tournament.

Quick tip

Remember: Sultan Azlan Shah Cup = men's hockey, Ipoh (Malaysia), since 1983; India won it 5 times; Australia = most titles.
