The traditional game 'Yubi Lakpi' is played in which state?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option C — Manipur
Detailed Solution
Yubi Lakpi is a traditional game of Manipur that resembles rugby. It is played with a coconut instead of a ball. In the Manipuri language, "yubi" means coconut and "lakpi" means snatching, so the name means "coconut snatching".
How Yubi Lakpi is played:
- It is played on a rectangular grass field, traditionally by two teams of seven players each.
- The coconut is soaked in oil (or greased) to make it slippery and hard to hold.
- Players also rub oil or water on their bodies so that opponents cannot grip them easily.
A player scores by carrying the coconut across the goal line at the opponent's end. Kicking the coconut is not allowed; players must carry it.
Players can tackle the coconut carrier to snatch the coconut.
The game is traditionally played during the Yaoshang festival (the Manipuri celebration of Holi) and was earlier played in the presence of the king. In the old tradition, the coconut was offered to the deity Shree Govindajee, and the winner was considered a symbol of strength.
Other traditional games and martial arts of Manipur:
- Sagol Kangjei: horseback hockey, the ancestor of modern polo.
- Khong Kangjei: hockey played on foot.
- Mukna: a traditional form of wrestling.
- Thang-Ta (Huyen Langlon): a martial art with swords and spears.
- Kang: a traditional indoor game in which players strike a flat object called a "kang" towards a target.
Manipur and modern sport:
Manipur has produced many sports stars, including boxer Mary Kom, weightlifters Kunjarani Devi and Mirabai Chanu, and footballers and hockey players.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Kerala is known for Kalaripayattu and snake boat races.
- ✗Assam is known for Bihu and traditional games such as buffalo fights during Bihu.
- ✗Mizoram is known for the Cheraw (bamboo) dance and traditional games such as Insuknawr.
Quick tip
Remember: Yubi Lakpi = Manipur's "coconut rugby" (greased coconut, 7 a side, played during Yaoshang); Sagol Kangjei = polo; Mukna = wrestling; Thang-Ta = martial art.
