Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Wimbledon

Detailed Solution

The Venus Rosewater Dish is the trophy presented to the winner of the ladies' singles championship at Wimbledon, held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London.

About the Venus Rosewater Dish:

  • It is a sterling silver salver (large round plate), partly gilded, about 48 cm in diameter.
  • It was made in 1864 by the Elkington and Company of Birmingham, England.

It is decorated with figures from mythology. The centre shows a figure of Temperance, surrounded by the four elements, and the rim shows Minerva with the seven liberal arts.

It has been presented to the ladies' singles champion since 1886.

The winner keeps the original trophy only for the presentation; she receives a smaller replica to keep.

Other Wimbledon trophies:

  • Gentlemen's singles: a gilded silver cup, about 47 cm high, first presented in 1887, with the inscription "The All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Champion of the World".
  • Doubles and mixed doubles: silver cups and challenge trophies.

Trophies of the other Grand Slams:

  • Australian Open: Norman Brookes Challenge Cup (men) and Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup (women).
  • French Open: Coupe des Mousquetaires (men) and Coupe Suzanne Lenglen (women).
  • US Open: the US Open trophies are silver cups for the men's and women's champions.

Recent Wimbledon ladies' singles champions:

  • 2023: Markéta Vondroušová (Czech Republic), the first unseeded woman to win in the Open Era.
  • 2024: Barbora Krejčíková (Czech Republic).
  • 2025: Iga Świątek (Poland), who won the final 6-0, 6-0.
  • Martina Navratilova holds the record with 9 Wimbledon singles titles.

Indian women at Wimbledon:

Sania Mirza won the ladies' doubles title in 2015 with Martina Hingis, and also won the Wimbledon girls' doubles title in 2003.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗US Open women's champions receive a silver cup, not the Venus Rosewater Dish.
  • ✗French Open women's champions receive the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen.
  • ✗Australian Open women's champions receive the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup.

Quick tip

Remember: Venus Rosewater Dish = Wimbledon ladies' singles; French Open = Coupe Suzanne Lenglen (women) and Coupe des Mousquetaires (men); Australian Open = Daphne Akhurst Cup (women) and Norman Brookes Cup (men).
