The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system is used in which sport?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Football

Detailed Solution

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is a system used in football (soccer) in which a team of match officials reviews video footage to help the on-field referee correct "clear and obvious errors" and "serious missed incidents".

How VAR works:

The VAR team watches the match on several screens in a video operation room, using multiple camera angles.

The VAR can only be used for four types of decisions:

  • Goals (and offences leading up to a goal, including offside).
  • Penalty decisions (penalty or no penalty).
  • Direct red cards (not second yellow cards).
  • Mistaken identity (when the referee cautions or sends off the wrong player).

The VAR advises the referee, but the final decision is always made by the on-field referee. The referee may watch the footage on a pitchside monitor; this is called an "on-field review" (OFR), signalled by drawing a rectangle shape with the hands.

History of VAR:

  • VAR was tested from 2016 and formally written into the Laws of the Game by IFAB (the International Football Association Board) in March 2018.
  • It was used for the first time at a FIFA World Cup at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
  • Semi-automated offside technology was introduced at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
  • Many leagues, such as the English Premier League, La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, now use VAR.

Similar technology in other sports:

  • Cricket: the Decision Review System (DRS), using ball-tracking (Hawk-Eye), UltraEdge and Hotspot, introduced in Test cricket in 2008-09.
  • Tennis: Hawk-Eye line calling, introduced in 2006; electronic line calling has replaced line judges at many tournaments.
  • Hockey: video referrals, which teams can request.
  • Goal-line technology (GLT) in football: used to check whether the whole ball has crossed the goal line; used at the World Cup since 2014.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Golf uses rules officials and video review in some cases, but not VAR.
  • ✗Chess uses arbiters and anti-cheating systems, not VAR.
  • ✗Athletics uses photo-finish cameras and video review, not VAR.

Quick tip

Remember: VAR = football (added to the Laws in 2018, first World Cup use 2018 Russia); reviews goals, penalties, direct red cards and mistaken identity; cricket = DRS; tennis = Hawk-Eye.
