The Vijay Hazare Trophy is a domestic tournament of which format of cricket?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — 50-over (one-day) cricket

Detailed Solution

The Vijay Hazare Trophy is India's national domestic one-day (List A) cricket championship, played in the 50-overs-a-side format. It is organised by the BCCI, and teams representing the states and other associations take part.

History of the tournament:

  • It began in 1993-94 as the Ranji Trophy One Day competition, played between zonal teams.
  • From 2002-03, it was renamed the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and the format was changed to include the state teams.
  • Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are among the most successful teams.

Several records have been set in the tournament. For example, in 2022, Ruturaj Gaikwad hit seven sixes in one over for Maharashtra, and in the same season Narayan Jagadeesan scored 277 runs for Tamil Nadu, the highest score in List A cricket at the time.

Who was Vijay Hazare?

Vijay Samuel Hazare (1915-2004) was one of India's greatest batsmen in the 1940s and 1950s.

He was the first Indian to score centuries in both innings of a Test match, against Australia at Adelaide in 1947-48.

He captained India to its first-ever Test victory, against England at Madras (Chennai) in February 1952.

He scored over 18,000 first-class runs and played most of his domestic cricket for Baroda.

He received the Padma Shri in 1960.

India's domestic tournaments:

  • Ranji Trophy (first-class, since 1934-35).
  • Duleep Trophy (zonal first-class, since 1961-62).
  • Irani Cup (since 1959-60).
  • Vijay Hazare Trophy (50 overs).

Deodhar Trophy (zonal one-day, named after Prof. D. B. Deodhar).

Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20, since 2006-07).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗T20 cricket is played in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the IPL.
  • ✗First-class cricket is played in the Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy.
  • ✗Under-19 cricket is played in the Cooch Behar Trophy and Vinoo Mankad Trophy.

Quick tip

Remember: Vijay Hazare Trophy = 50-over domestic championship (named 2002-03); Vijay Hazare = captain in India's first Test win (1952) and first Indian with twin Test centuries (1947-48).
