What are the dimensions of the kabaddi playing field for men?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — 13 m x 10 m

Detailed Solution

Under the rules of the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) and the International Kabaddi Federation, the kabaddi playing field for men is 13 metres long and 10 metres wide. For women (and juniors), it is 12 metres by 8 metres.

Parts of the kabaddi field:

Mid line: divides the court into two halves, one for each team.

Baulk line: a line in each half, 3.75 m from the mid line (for men). A raider must cross it for the raid to count.

Bonus line: 1 m beyond the baulk line, towards the end line. A raider can earn a bonus point by touching it with one foot while the other foot is in the air, if there are at least six defenders on the court.

Lobby: a 1-metre-wide strip on each side of the court. It becomes part of the playing area only when there is a struggle (contact) between the raider and defenders.

End line: the boundary at the back of each half.

Key rules of kabaddi:

  • Each team has 7 players on the court, with 5 substitutes.
  • A match lasts 40 minutes (two halves of 20 minutes, with a 5-minute break) for men.
  • The raider must keep saying "kabaddi, kabaddi" (the "cant") in one breath while raiding.
  • A "Lona" (all out) gives the team 2 extra points when all the players of the other team are out.
  • Kabaddi is the state game of several states, including Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Telangana and Maharashtra (as per various declarations).

It became part of the Asian Games in 1990 (Beijing), where India won gold. The Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) began in 2014.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗12 m x 8 m is the size for women.
  • ✗15 m x 10 m is not a standard kabaddi size.
  • ✗27 m x 16 m is the size of a kho-kho field.

Quick tip

Remember: Kabaddi field = 13 m x 10 m (men), 12 m x 8 m (women); lobby = 1 m; 7 players; 40 minutes; Asian Games since 1990; kho-kho field = 27 m x 16 m.
