What are the width and length of a lawn tennis court for doubles matches?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — 36 feet and 78 feet

Detailed Solution

A lawn tennis court is 78 feet (23.77 m) long for both singles and doubles. Its width is 36 feet (10.97 m) for doubles and 27 feet (8.23 m) for singles. The extra 4.5 feet on each side for doubles are called the "doubles alleys" or "tramlines".

Other measurements of a tennis court:

  • The net is 3 feet (0.914 m) high at the centre and 3.5 feet (1.07 m) high at the posts.
  • The service line is 21 feet (6.40 m) from the net on each side.
  • The service boxes are 21 feet long and 13.5 feet wide.
  • The baseline is the back boundary line of the court.

Tennis scoring:

  • Points are counted as 15, 30, 40 and game.
  • When both players have 40 points, the score is "deuce", and a player must win two points in a row to win the game.
  • A player must win six games with a two-game lead to win a set, or win a tie-break at 6-6.
  • Men's Grand Slam matches are best of five sets, and women's are best of three.

Court surfaces of the four Grand Slams:

  • Australian Open (Melbourne): hard court (January).
  • French Open (Roland Garros, Paris): red clay (May-June).
  • Wimbledon (London): grass (June-July); the oldest tennis tournament (1877).
  • US Open (New York): hard court (August-September).

The world governing body is the International Tennis Federation (ITF), based in London. The professional tours are run by the ATP (men) and WTA (women).

The Davis Cup is the men's international team competition, and the Billie Jean King Cup is the women's.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗27 feet and 78 feet are the singles court measurements.
  • ✗30 feet and 72 feet are not standard tennis court measurements.
  • ✗Good to know
  • ✗84 feet is not the length of a tennis court.

Quick tip

Remember: Tennis court = 78 ft long; 36 ft wide (doubles), 27 ft wide (singles); net = 3 ft at the centre, 3.5 ft at the posts; Wimbledon = grass, French Open = clay.
