What is the distance between the stumps (bowling crease) and the popping crease at the same end of a cricket pitch?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — 1.22 m (4 feet)

Detailed Solution

Under the Laws of Cricket, the popping crease is marked 4 feet (1.22 m) in front of, and parallel to, the bowling crease, on which the stumps stand.

Creases on a cricket pitch:

Bowling crease: the line through the centre of the stumps at each end. It is 8 feet 8 inches (2.64 m) long.

Popping crease: 4 feet (1.22 m) in front of the bowling crease. It is considered unlimited in length. A batsman is "in his ground" when some part of his bat (held in hand) or his body is grounded behind it. The bowler's front foot must land with some part behind the popping crease, otherwise it is a no-ball.

Return creases: lines at right angles to the popping crease, 4 feet 4 inches (1.32 m) on either side of the middle stump. The bowler's back foot must land inside the return crease.

Other pitch measurements:

  • The pitch is 22 yards (20.12 m) long, between the two bowling creases, and 10 feet (3.05 m) wide.
  • Each wicket is 9 inches (22.86 cm) wide and 28 inches (71.1 cm) high.
  • The two bails sit on top of the three stumps.

Run outs and stumpings:

  • A batsman is run out or stumped if the wicket is put down while he is out of his ground, that is, not behind the popping crease.
  • Dive and slide techniques are used to reach the crease in time.
  • The Laws of Cricket are maintained by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), founded in 1787.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗2.44 m (8 feet) is the height of a football goal, not a cricket crease measurement.
  • ✗0.61 m (2 feet) is not a cricket crease measurement.
  • ✗3.05 m (10 feet) is the width of the cricket pitch.

Quick tip

Remember: Popping crease = 4 feet (1.22 m) in front of the bowling crease; pitch = 22 yards long, 10 feet wide; stumps 28 inches high, wicket 9 inches wide.
