Which country has won the FIFA World Cup the most number of times?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Brazil

Detailed Solution

Brazil has won the FIFA World Cup five times, more than any other country: in 1958 (Sweden), 1962 (Chile), 1970 (Mexico), 1994 (USA) and 2002 (Korea and Japan).

Brazil's World Cup record:

  • It is the only team to have played in every World Cup since the first one in 1930.
  • Pelé, Brazil's greatest player, won three World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970), the only player to do so.

After its third title in 1970, Brazil kept the original Jules Rimet Trophy permanently. (The trophy was later stolen in Rio de Janeiro in 1983 and never recovered.)

Brazil's 2002 team was led by Ronaldo, who scored both goals in the final against Germany.

FIFA World Cup winners (by number of titles):

  • Brazil: 5.
  • Germany (including West Germany): 4 (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014).
  • Italy: 4 (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006).
  • Argentina: 3 (1978, 1986, 2022).
  • France: 2 (1998, 2018).
  • Uruguay: 2 (1930, 1950).
  • England: 1 (1966).
  • Spain: 1 (2010).

Key World Cup facts:

  • The first World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930, and Uruguay won it.
  • The current trophy, the FIFA World Cup Trophy, has been used since 1974.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar was the first held in the Middle East and in November-December. Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, beat France on penalties in the final.

The 2026 World Cup is to be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico, and will be the first with 48 teams.

Germany's Miroslav Klose holds the record for the most World Cup goals (16).

India qualified for the 1950 World Cup but did not take part.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Germany has won 4 times.
  • ✗Italy has won 4 times.
  • ✗Argentina has won 3 times, most recently in 2022.

Quick tip

Remember: Most FIFA World Cup titles = Brazil (5: 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002); Germany and Italy 4; Argentina 3 (latest 2022); Pelé = only player with 3 World Cup wins.
