Answer: Option D — Royal Calcutta Golf Club

Detailed Solution

The Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC), in Kolkata, founded in 1829, is the oldest golf club in India and the first golf club established outside the British Isles.

About the Royal Calcutta Golf Club:

  • It was founded in 1829 as the "Dum Dum Golfing Club" by Scottish officers and businessmen of the East India Company.
  • It was originally at Dum Dum, near Calcutta, and later moved to its present location in Tollygunge, south Kolkata.
  • In 1911, it was given the title "Royal" by King George V, the first golf club outside Britain to receive this honour.
  • It started the "Amateur Golf Championship of India" in 1892, the oldest amateur championship in the country.
  • It is regarded as the birthplace of golf in Asia and has influenced the growth of golf in India.

Other old golf clubs in India:

  • Tollygunge Club, Kolkata (1895).
  • Bangalore Golf Club (1876).
  • Delhi Golf Club (1931; re-formed 1951).

Golf in India:

  • The "Professional Golf Tour of India" (PGTI) runs professional events.
  • Jeev Milkha Singh became the first Indian to join the European Tour (1998).

Anirban Lahiri, Shubhankar Sharma and Aditi Ashok are well-known Indian golfers. Aditi Ashok finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics (2021), the best result by an Indian golfer at the Olympics.

Golf returned to the Olympics in 2016 at Rio de Janeiro, after more than 100 years.

About golf:

  • It developed in Scotland in the 15th century.
  • St Andrews in Scotland is called the "Home of Golf"; the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews was founded in 1754.
  • The four men's "major" championships are the Masters, the US Open, the Open Championship and the PGA Championship.

Other "firsts" in Kolkata:

  • The Calcutta Cricket and Football Club (1792) is one of the oldest cricket clubs outside England.
  • The Royal Calcutta Turf Club (1847) is one of the oldest horse-racing clubs in India.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Delhi Golf Club was founded much later, in the 20th century.
  • ✗The Royal Bombay Yacht Club is a sailing club in Mumbai.
  • ✗The Bangalore Golf Club was founded in 1876.

Quick tip

Remember: Royal Calcutta Golf Club = oldest golf club in India and first outside Britain (1829, Dum Dum; "Royal" in 1911; now at Tollygunge); St Andrews = "Home of Golf"; Aditi Ashok = 4th at Tokyo 2020.
