Which was the first city to host the Summer Paralympic Games twice?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Tokyo

Detailed Solution

Tokyo, the capital of Japan, became the first city to host the Summer Paralympic Games twice. It hosted the Paralympics in 1964 and again in 2020 (held in August-September 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic).

Tokyo 1964 Paralympics:

They were the second official Summer Paralympics, after Rome 1960.

They were the first Paralympics to use the name "Paralympic Games" (from "paraplegic" and "Olympic"). Only wheelchair athletes took part.

Tokyo 2020 Paralympics:

  • About 4,400 athletes from 162 delegations competed in 22 sports.
  • Badminton and taekwondo were included for the first time.

India won 19 medals (5 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze), its best performance until then. Gold medallists included Avani Lekhara (shooting), the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic gold, Sumit Antil (javelin), Pramod Bhagat and Krishna Nagar (badminton), and Manish Narwal (shooting).

India improved further at Paris 2024, winning 29 medals, including 7 gold.

Other "firsts" for host cities:

  • Tokyo was also the first Asian city to host the Summer Olympics (1964).
  • Beijing is the first city to host both the Summer Olympics (2008) and the Winter Olympics (2022), along with both Paralympics.

London hosted the Summer Olympics three times (1908, 1948 and 2012), more than any other city, but it hosted the Summer Paralympics only once, in 2012. The 1984 Paralympics were held jointly at Stoke Mandeville (England) and New York.

Paris hosted its first Summer Paralympics in 2024, although it hosted the Olympics in 1900, 1924 and 2024.

Los Angeles will host the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, its third Olympics.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗London has hosted the Summer Paralympics only once (2012).
  • ✗Beijing hosted the Summer Paralympics once (2008) and the Winter Paralympics once (2022).
  • ✗Paris hosted the Summer Paralympics for the first time in 2024.

Quick tip

Remember: Tokyo = first city to host the Summer Paralympics twice (1964 and 2020); Beijing = first to host both Summer and Winter Olympics; India at Paris 2024 Paralympics = 29 medals.
