Who became the first Indian to be elected President of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) in 2016?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Narinder Batra

Detailed Solution

In November 2016, Narinder Dhruv Batra was elected President of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) at its congress in Dubai. He became the first Indian, and the first person from outside Europe, to head the FIH since it was founded in 1924.

More about Narinder Batra:

  • He was earlier the President of Hockey India, the national body for hockey.
  • In 2017, he was also elected President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
  • In 2019, he became a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
  • He was re-elected FIH President in 2021.
  • In July 2022, he resigned from the posts of FIH President, IOA President and IOC member, after a Delhi High Court order and controversies over his position.
  • He was succeeded as FIH President by Tayyab Ikram of Pakistan, who was elected in 2022.

About the International Hockey Federation (FIH):

  • It was founded in 1924 in Paris and is now headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland.
  • It organises the Hockey World Cup (first held in 1971), the FIH Pro League (since 2019) and Olympic hockey.

India co-hosted the 2023 Men's Hockey World Cup in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, Odisha. Rourkela's Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium is one of the largest hockey stadiums in the world.

Other Indians in top international sports positions:

  • Jay Shah: Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) since December 2024.
  • Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar: earlier ICC Chairmen.
  • Jagmohan Dalmiya and Sharad Pawar: earlier ICC Presidents.
  • Randhir Singh: acting President of the Olympic Council of Asia (2021-2024).
  • T. Usha: first woman President of the IOA (2022).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗P. S. Gill was President of the Indian Hockey Federation, not the FIH.
  • ✗Mariamma Koshy was President of the Indian Women's Hockey Federation, not the FIH.
  • ✗Ashok Kumar is a former Indian hockey player who scored the winning goal in the 1975 World Cup final.

Quick tip

Remember: Narinder Batra = first Indian (and first non-European) FIH President (2016); also IOA President (2017) and IOC member; successor = Tayyab Ikram (2022); FIH = 1924, Lausanne.
