Who was named 'Man of the Match' in the final of the 1983 Cricket World Cup?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Mohinder Amarnath

Detailed Solution

In the final of the 1983 Prudential World Cup at Lord's, London, on 25 June 1983, India's all-rounder Mohinder Amarnath was named Man of the Match for his all-round performance.

His performance in the final:

  • With the bat, he scored 26 runs, one of the higher scores in India's modest total of 183.
  • With the ball, he took 3 wickets for 12 runs in 7 overs, dismissing Jeff Dujon, Malcolm Marshall and finally Michael Holding, the last West Indian wicket, which sealed India's victory by 43 runs.
  • He had also been named Man of the Match in the semi-final against England at Old Trafford, where he scored 46 and took 2 wickets.

The 1983 final:

  • India: 183 all out in 54.4 overs (Srikkanth 38 was the top score).
  • West Indies: 140 all out in 52 overs.
  • India's bowlers, especially Madan Lal (3 for 31), Mohinder Amarnath (3 for 12) and Balwinder Sandhu (2 for 32), bowled out the strong West Indian batting line-up.
  • Kapil Dev took a famous running catch to dismiss Viv Richards.

More about Mohinder Amarnath:

  • He is the son of Lala Amarnath, independent India's first Test captain.
  • He was known as "Jimmy" and was famous for his courage against fast bowling.
  • He was one of the best batsmen against the great West Indies and Pakistan fast bowlers in the early 1980s.
  • In the 2021 film "83" about the World Cup win, Mohinder Amarnath was played by Saqib Saleem.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Kapil Dev was the captain and took a key catch, but he was not Man of the Match.
  • ✗Krishnamachari Srikkanth was the top scorer in the final (38) but was not Man of the Match.
  • ✗Madan Lal took 3 wickets, including Viv Richards, but the award went to Amarnath.

Quick tip

Remember: 1983 World Cup final (Lord's) Man of the Match = Mohinder Amarnath (26 runs and 3/12; also semi-final MoM); top scorer = Srikkanth (38); India won by 43 runs.
