Who was the first captain of the Indian Test cricket team?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — C. K. Nayudu

Detailed Solution

  • Nayudu. Cottari Kanakaiya Nayudu (1895-1967) was the captain of India in its first-ever Test match, played against England at Lord's, London, from 25 to 28 June 1932. India lost by 158 runs, but the team gave a good account of itself.

Background: The Maharaja of Porbandar was originally named captain for the 1932 tour of England, but he stood down because of his poor form, and C. K. Nayudu led India in the only Test of the tour.

About C. K. Nayudu:

  • He was born in Nagpur (Maharashtra) and played for Holkar (Indore) in domestic cricket for many years.
  • He was a powerful batsman known for hitting big sixes, as well as a useful bowler and fine fielder.
  • He played seven Test matches for India, from 1932 to 1936.
  • He played first-class cricket for an unusually long time, well into his sixties.
  • He was the first cricketer to receive the Padma Bhushan, in 1956.
  • He was famously chosen as one of the "Wisden Cricketers of the Year" in 1933.

The BCCI's highest honour for former players, the "Col. C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award", was started in 1994 in his memory. Its first recipient was Lala Amarnath.

The "Col. C. K. Nayudu Trophy" is an Under-25 (now Under-23) domestic tournament.

Other Indian captaincy "firsts":

  • Lala Amarnath: the first captain of independent India (1947-48).
  • Vijay Hazare: captain in India's first Test win (1952).
  • Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi: the youngest Indian Test captain at the time (21, in 1962) and the captain in India's first overseas Test win (New Zealand, 1968).
  • Ajit Wadekar: captain when India won its first Test series in England and the West Indies (1971).
  • Kapil Dev: captain of the team that won the 1983 World Cup.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Lala Amarnath was the first captain of independent India.
  • ✗The Maharaja of Porbandar was appointed captain but stepped aside.
  • ✗Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi captained India in 1946 and also played Test cricket for England.

Quick tip

Remember: First Indian Test captain = C. K. Nayudu (Lord's, June 1932); first cricketer with Padma Bhushan (1956); first captain of independent India = Lala Amarnath.
