Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option B — Mohammad Azharuddin
Detailed Solution
Mohammad Azharuddin scored centuries in each of his first three Test matches, against England in 1984-85. This remains a world record: no other batsman has scored centuries in his first three Tests.
His three centuries:
- 110 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata (debut Test, December 1984-January 1985).
- 105 at Chepauk, Chennai (January 1985).
- 122 at Green Park, Kanpur (February 1985).
- He also scored 54 not out in the second innings at Kanpur.
More about Mohammad Azharuddin:
- He was born on 8 February 1963 in Hyderabad.
- He was known for his elegant, wristy batting, especially his flicks on the leg side, and for being an outstanding fielder.
- He captained India in 47 Tests and 174 ODIs, and led India in three World Cups (1992, 1996 and 1999).
- He scored 22 Test centuries and 7 ODI centuries.
In 2000, his career ended when he was banned for life by the BCCI over match-fixing allegations. In 2012, the Andhra Pradesh High Court set aside the ban.
He later entered politics and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Moradabad in 2009.
He served as President of the Hyderabad Cricket Association.
Other Indian debut records:
- Sourav Ganguly scored centuries in his first two Tests (131 at Lord's and 136 at Trent Bridge, 1996).
- Rohit Sharma scored centuries in his first two Tests (2013).
- Lala Amarnath scored India's first Test century on debut in 1933.
- Shikhar Dhawan scored 187 on debut against Australia in 2013, the fastest Test century by a debutant (85 balls).
- Prithvi Shaw became the youngest Indian to score a century on Test debut (2018, against the West Indies).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Sourav Ganguly scored centuries in his first two Tests, not three.
- ✗Rohit Sharma also scored centuries in his first two Tests.
- ✗Sunil Gavaskar scored 774 runs in his debut series but did not score centuries in his first three Tests.
Quick tip
Remember: Mohammad Azharuddin = centuries in his first three Tests (1984-85 vs England, Kolkata, Chennai, Kanpur), a world record; Ganguly and Rohit = centuries in first two Tests.
