Who was the first Indian cricketer to score a triple century in Test cricket?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Virender Sehwag

Detailed Solution

Virender Sehwag became the first Indian batsman to score a triple century (300 or more runs in an innings) in Test cricket. He scored 309 runs against Pakistan at Multan in March 2004, earning the nickname "Multan ka Sultan" (the Sultan of Multan).

Sehwag's triple centuries:

309 vs Pakistan, Multan, 2004: India's first Test triple century. India went on to win the match, India's first Test win in Pakistan.

319 vs South Africa, Chennai, 2008: then the highest Test score by an Indian. It came off just 304 balls, making it one of the fastest triple centuries in Test history.

He is one of the few batsmen to have scored two triple centuries in Test cricket, alongside Don Bradman, Brian Lara and Chris Gayle.

He narrowly missed a third, scoring 293 against Sri Lanka in Mumbai in 2009.

Other Indian triple centurion:

Karun Nair scored 303 not out against England at Chennai in December 2016, in only his third Test. He became the second Indian to score a Test triple century and the first to convert his maiden Test century into a triple century.

No other Indian has scored a Test triple century.

More about Virender Sehwag:

  • He was born on 20 October 1978 in Delhi and is nicknamed the "Nawab of Najafgarh".
  • He was known for his aggressive batting as an opener in all formats.
  • He scored 219 against the West Indies at Indore in 2011, the second double century in ODI history, after Sachin Tendulkar's 200 not out in 2010.
  • He was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2023.

World records:

Brian Lara (West Indies) holds the record for the highest individual Test score: 400 not out against England in 2004.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Karun Nair was the second Indian to score a Test triple century (2016).
  • ✗Rahul Dravid's highest Test score is 270 (vs Pakistan, 2004).
  • ✗Sunil Gavaskar's highest Test score is 236 not out.

Quick tip

Remember: First Indian Test triple century = Virender Sehwag (309 vs Pakistan, Multan, 2004, "Multan ka Sultan"; also 319 in 2008); second = Karun Nair (303*, 2016); highest Test score = Lara 400*.
