Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Satnam Singh Bhamara

Detailed Solution

In June 2015, Satnam Singh Bhamara became the first Indian-born player to be drafted into the NBA (National Basketball Association), the top professional basketball league of the USA and Canada. He was selected by the Dallas Mavericks as the 52nd pick in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft.

More about Satnam Singh:

  • He was born on 10 December 1995 in Ballo Ke, a village near Barnala in Punjab, in a family of farmers.
  • He is very tall, about 7 feet 2 inches (2.18 m).
  • He was spotted by the IMG Reliance programme and was sent to the IMG Academy in Florida, USA, at the age of 14 to train in basketball.

He did not get to play an NBA regular-season match. He played for the Texas Legends in the NBA Development League (now G League) and later returned to India.

He later turned to professional wrestling.

His story was told in the Netflix documentary "One in a Billion" (2016).

Sim Bhullar:

Sim (Gursimran) Bhullar, a Canadian of Indian (Punjabi) origin, became the first player of Indian descent to play in an NBA regular-season game, for the Sacramento Kings in April 2015, a few months before Satnam's draft.

About the NBA:

  • It was founded in 1946 in New York as the Basketball Association of America and renamed the NBA in 1949.
  • It has 30 teams (29 in the USA and 1 in Canada, the Toronto Raptors).
  • Famous NBA players include Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Stephen Curry and Shaquille O'Neal.

Basketball in India:

  • The Basketball Federation of India was formed in 1950.
  • Amjyot Singh and Vishesh Bhriguvanshi are well-known Indian national team players.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Sim Bhullar was the first player of Indian origin to play in an NBA game, but he was born in Canada and was not drafted.
  • ✗Amjyot Singh is an Indian national team player who played in the NBA G League but was not drafted into the NBA.
  • ✗Vishesh Bhriguvanshi is a former captain of the Indian basketball team.

Quick tip

Remember: First Indian drafted into the NBA = Satnam Singh Bhamara (2015, Dallas Mavericks, 52nd pick); first player of Indian origin to play an NBA game = Sim Bhullar (2015, Sacramento Kings).
