Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Tripoli

Detailed Solution

Tripoli is the capital and the largest city of Libya.

About Tripoli:

  • It is located in north-western Libya, on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
  • It was founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BCE, who called it "Oea".
  • Its name comes from the Greek "Tripolis", meaning "three cities", referring to Oea, Sabratha and Leptis Magna.

It has been ruled by the Romans, Arabs, Spanish, the Knights of St. John and the Ottoman Turks.

Its old walled city (Medina) and the "Red Castle" (Assaraya al-Hamra) are famous landmarks.

In Arabic, it is called "Tarabulus al-Gharb" ("Tripoli of the West"), to distinguish it from Tripoli in Lebanon.

About Libya:

  • It is located in North Africa, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, and by Egypt, Sudan, Chad, Niger, Algeria and Tunisia.
  • It is the fourth-largest country in Africa by area; more than 90 per cent of it is desert (part of the Sahara).
  • It has the largest proven oil reserves in Africa and is a member of OPEC.
  • Its currency is the Libyan dinar.
  • It was an Italian colony from 1911 to 1943, and became independent in 1951 as a kingdom under King Idris.
  • Muammar Gaddafi seized power in a coup in 1969 and ruled until 2011, when he was overthrown and killed during an uprising (part of the "Arab Spring").
  • Since then, the country has been divided between rival governments based in Tripoli (west) and in the east (Benghazi and Tobruk).
  • The "Great Man-Made River" project brings underground water from the Sahara to coastal cities; it is one of the largest irrigation projects in the world.

India and Libya:

India evacuated about 15,000 Indians from Libya in 2011 ("Operation Safe Homecoming").

Ancient sites in Libya:

Leptis Magna, Sabratha and Cyrene are UNESCO World Heritage Sites with Roman and Greek ruins.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Benghazi is the second-largest city of Libya, in the east.
  • ✗Tunis is the capital of Tunisia.
  • ✗Cairo is the capital of Egypt.

Quick tip

Remember: Libya = capital Tripoli (Mediterranean coast; "three cities"); currency Libyan dinar; largest oil reserves in Africa; Gaddafi 1969-2011; Benghazi = second city; Tunis = Tunisia.
