Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Nassau

Detailed Solution

Nassau is the capital and the largest city of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

About Nassau:

  • It is located on the island of New Providence.
  • It was named in 1695 after the Prince of Orange-Nassau, who became King William III of England.

In the early 18th century, it was a base for pirates, including the famous Edward Teach ("Blackbeard"). The period is called the "Republic of Pirates".

Today, it is a major tourist centre and a port for cruise ships.

It is also an important offshore banking and financial centre.

Paradise Island, connected to Nassau by bridges, has large resorts.

About the Bahamas:

  • It is an archipelago of about 700 islands and more than 2,000 cays (small low islands) in the Atlantic Ocean, south-east of Florida (USA) and north of Cuba.
  • Christopher Columbus first landed in the "New World" in October 1492 on an island in the Bahamas, which he named "San Salvador".
  • It was a British colony and became independent on 10 July 1973.
  • It is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, with the British monarch as head of state.
  • Its currency is the Bahamian dollar, which is pegged at par with the US dollar.
  • Its official language is English.
  • Tourism and financial services are the main parts of its economy.

It is low-lying and vulnerable to hurricanes and sea-level rise. Hurricane Dorian (2019) caused severe damage.

The name "Bahamas" is believed to come from the Spanish "baja mar", meaning "shallow sea".

Capitals of other Caribbean countries:

  • Jamaica: Kingston.
  • Cuba: Havana.
  • Barbados: Bridgetown.
  • Trinidad and Tobago: Port of Spain.
  • Haiti: Port-au-Prince.
  • Dominican Republic: Santo Domingo.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Kingston is the capital of Jamaica.
  • ✗Havana is the capital of Cuba.
  • ✗Bridgetown is the capital of Barbados.

Quick tip

Remember: Bahamas = capital Nassau (New Providence island; independent 1973; Bahamian dollar pegged to the US dollar; Columbus's first landfall 1492 at San Salvador); Jamaica = Kingston; Cuba = Havana; Barbados = Bridgetown.
