Answer: Option B — Hanoi

Detailed Solution

Hanoi is the capital of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

About Hanoi:

  • It is located in northern Vietnam, on the banks of the Red River (Song Hong).
  • Its name means "inside the river" or "between rivers".

It is more than 1,000 years old. In 1010, Emperor Ly Thai To moved the capital to this site and named it "Thang Long" ("Rising Dragon"). Hanoi celebrated its 1,000th anniversary in 2010.

The "Central Sector of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long" is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2010).

It was the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1945.

It was the capital of North Vietnam from 1954 to 1976, and became the capital of unified Vietnam in 1976.

Famous places: Hoan Kiem Lake ("Lake of the Returned Sword"), the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the Temple of Literature (Vietnam's first national university, 1070) and the Old Quarter.

Ho Chi Minh City:

  • It is the largest city and the economic centre of Vietnam.
  • It was called "Saigon" until 1976, and was the capital of South Vietnam.
  • It was renamed after Ho Chi Minh, the founder of modern Vietnam, after the end of the Vietnam War.

About Vietnam:

  • It is located on the eastern side of the Indochinese peninsula, in South-East Asia.
  • Its currency is the Dong.
  • It is a communist state, led by the Communist Party of Vietnam.
  • Ho Chi Minh declared independence from France on 2 September 1945, which is Vietnam's National Day.
  • The French were defeated at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954.
  • The Vietnam War (1955-1975) ended with the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975, and the country was reunified in 1976.
  • The "Doi Moi" reforms (1986) opened up the economy, and Vietnam is now one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia.
  • It is one of the largest exporters of rice and the second-largest producer of coffee.

India and Vietnam:

  • They have a "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership" (2016).
  • India has supplied patrol boats and gifted the missile corvette INS Kirpan (2023) to Vietnam.

Other important cities:

  • Hue: the imperial capital of the Nguyen dynasty (1802-1945); UNESCO site.
  • Da Nang: a major port city in central Vietnam.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is the largest city.
  • ✗Da Nang is a port city.
  • ✗Hue was the old imperial capital.

Quick tip

Remember: Vietnam = capital Hanoi (ancient Thang Long, 1010; Red River); largest city = Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon); old imperial capital = Hue; currency = Dong; National Day = 2 September.
