Answer: Option B — India, Israel, the USA and the UAE
Detailed Solution
"I2U2" is a grouping of four countries: India and Israel (the two "I"s), and the United States and the United Arab Emirates (the two "U"s). It is sometimes called the "West Asian Quad" or "Middle East Quad".
About I2U2:
- It was first conceived during a meeting of the foreign ministers of the four countries in October 2021, which was then called the "International Forum for Economic Cooperation".
- Its first leaders' summit was held virtually on 14 July 2022, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
- Its aim is to encourage joint investments and new initiatives in six areas: water, energy, transportation, space, health and food security.
- It focuses on mobilising private sector capital and expertise to modernise infrastructure, promote low-carbon development and improve public health.
Projects announced:
- The UAE agreed to invest about 2 billion US dollars to develop a series of "integrated food parks" across India, with technology from the USA and Israel.
- A hybrid renewable energy project (wind and solar power with battery storage) in Gujarat.
- It is linked to the improved relations between Israel and the UAE after the "Abraham Accords" (2020).
Other similar groupings involving India:
- Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue): India, the USA, Japan and Australia; first formed in 2007 and revived in 2017; its focus is a "free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific".
- BRICS: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa; expanded in 2024-25 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE and Indonesia.
- SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation): India joined as a full member in 2017.
- IBSA: India, Brazil and South Africa (2003).
- India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC): announced at the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023, to connect India to Europe through the Middle East by sea and rail.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Iran and the UK are not members of I2U2.
- ✗Indonesia and the UK are not members of I2U2.
- ✗Iraq and the UK are not members of I2U2.
